Costly reflects exceptional materials, thoughtful design and the time a skilled craftsperson takes to create something to a very high standard. The price reflects what has gone into the piece.

Expensive is paying a great deal for something that lets you down. It fails to serve its purpose and betrays the trust you placed in it.

One justifies its price through quality and craftsmanship. The other leaves you questioning what you paid for.
